Pivotal joins Transition Cambridge in supporting this Cambridge Literary Festival Event.
In his latest book, naturalist and environmental activist Mark Cocker explores six special places which embody the history of British conservation. We meet key characters who shaped the story of the British countryside – Victorian visionaries like Octavia Hill, founder of the National Trust, as well as brilliant naturalists such as Max Nicholson and Derek Ratcliffe.
The book asks searching questions about who owns the land and why? And who benefits from green policies? Above all it attempts to solve a puzzle: why do the British seem to love their countryside more than almost any other nation, yet we have come to live amid one of the most denatured landscapes on Earth?
As part of the Films for Our Future Festival, Pivotal is screening this beautiful documentary about a young couple on a quest throughout Britain for a more satisfying and sustainable way of living. Disillusioned by their urban lifestyles of consumption and alienation, Lily and Pete set out to discover other ways of living in the modern world. Their journey didn't provide them with easy answers, but it did inspire them and introduce them to some of the new ways of thinking that may just change the way we all live and help to protect the planet.

Join three passionate environmentalists for an optimistic discussion about the new environmental heroes who are taking governments to court – and winning. ClientEarth is the only pan-European group of environmental lawyers working in the public interest. Its founder, environmental lawyer James Thornton, has now written a book about his experiences battling in the courts for the future of our planet. He will be joined in this event by co-writer, Martin Goodman, and ClientEarth trustee, composer and producer, Brian Eno.

Pivotal continues, with a small-scale, home-made, collaborative festival this November!
Pivotal, in collaboration with our friends Cambridge Carbon Footprint, Transition Cambridge, and Friends of the Earth Cambridge, are taking over the Museum of Technology on Cambridge's riverside, for a night and a day on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th November.
We aim to keep the conversations going, and have chosen this iconic venue to highlight the link between the environment and technology, with us, the human community, the piece in-between. We are partnering with these 3 great fellow NGO's to highlight the great work we all do, and share our common goals. We're working on bringing you a festival that takes over the museum with films, conversations and maybe provocations, spoken word and some story-making, music, art, food and drink, and lots more.....watch this space!

Pivotal Festival this weekend at the Museum of Technology in Cambridge!
Conversation Cafe, organised in association with our friends at Transition Cambridge, is an opportunity to create some space in which to hear and be heard. The evening will be a mixture of facilitated group discussion around Transition and Pivotal values, such as the environment, social justice and democracy, food and water security, energy security and immigration. The aim is simply to help people find some personal clarity about their voting position. No party political speeches, grandstanding or attempts to sway opinion, just honest conversation with refreshments. Frozen Ark Trustee Paul Pearce-Kelly, Senior Curator of Invertebrates, Lower Vertebrates and Research at the Zoological Society London, joins Tim Flach, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and award winning photographer, to discuss and illustrate the goals of the charity, which works to preserve the genetic material of endangered lifeforms.

Why, when climate change is evidently a pressing issue with potentially disastrous consequences for our planet and all its inhabitants, have we been unable to enact the changes required at either local or national levels? Couldthe problem lie in our system of governance, e.g. insufficient political will to take unpopular decisions in the face of short-term periods in office, or a dysfunctional system which doesn't allow politicians to follow the will of the people they represent?
This"open space" style discussion will focus on the question: "How can we improve our democracy?" There will be at least one group discussing how to stand as an independent candidate in the upcoming city council elections.

To get our second Pivotal Conversation event started, we've invited speakers Jacky Sutton-Adam from Transition Cambridge; John Turner and Jenny Langley, who are involved with the new Circular Cambridge initiative; and Giulia Nicolini, a recent sociology grad who has been involved with various food and environmental groups in Cambridge - in particular, she worked with Cambridge Sustainable Food from 2014 until last month.

Come and share the beauty and community spirit of a very special public garden. This winter fireside party for the whole family includes acoustic music, storytelling, a talk on Peak Soil and Permaculture by sustainable gardening expert Charlotte Synge, and the unveiling of a new shed mural by artist Rebecca Lindum Greene.
Pivotal has teamed up with revolutionary art collective Rebel Arts and poetry publisher Allographic for the Mill Road Winter Fair. We'll be staging a family friendly street theatre project, as well as takeaway poetry. Pivotal organisers will be available to talk about the project and share what we've learned about the coming tide of global change.
